The Tui chub are one of the most important non-game fish species to the survival of the trout and ecology of the lake. These fish have a life span of up to 32 years. They don’t really get much over 3 pounds but their annual spawn in the warm waters of the north and west basins in late summer sustain the trout through the cold harsh winters when the lake ices over.
We didn’t know the importance of this species in the 1940’s when my family began fishing the lake. We just considered them to be trash fish, killed them and fed them to the seagulls and pelicans. Now through many years of study it is recognized as a species of great importance. It is requested that these fish as well as the suckers be carefully released in a live condition if caught.
