Randy Aubrey is the founder of Project Eagle Lake Trout. Our fish and lake needed help. We needed to organize a non-profit organization in order to collect money for our first goal of purchasing an Alaskan Weir. After finding out how much time it would take to form such an entity a decision was made to enlist the help of Sep’s and Marilyn Hendrickson, founders of California Inland Fisheries Foundation, Inc. CIFFI for short. Sep’s and Marilyn were able to get the show on the road in 2004.
The Eagle Lake General Store is the local Project Eagle Lake (rainbow) Trout headquarters (during the fishing season) and hold numerous fundraiser’s and parties throughout the fishing season. Local and distant businesses contribute heavily to the fundraiser's and auctions, supplying anything from guided fishing trips, hunt club memberships, tackle, rods and reels, cabin rentals and boat rentals among other merchandise and gifts. We are lucky to have some of the highest quality gear and gifts donated by very generous folks.
The first year of collecting funds grossed just over $10,000. We were able to purchase weir supplies for the DFG while they salvaged what they could from scraps. Together we had all the makings for our own custom Alaskan Weir.
We were also able to start feeding a couple thousand ELT to 2 pounds or more that are released twice yearly into Eagle Lake. The “super” food is supplied by Project Eagle Lake Trout while the DFG houses and feeds the fish for an extra 6 months to a year before they are planted in the lake. They are called “super fish” and are much larger than our normal planted fish and are very healthy and robust. Truly, a super fish.
In 2006 anglers donated just over $30,000 to the cause. None of this would be possible without the generous donations coming from everywhere. Our deepest thanks goes out to all who donated.
PELT has also purchased some lighted buoys for the lake for 2008. More on that later.
